Tank Review Series: AMX 13 90

Hello tankers,
Time to start the tank review series with one of my favorite tanks: the AMX 13 90.

  • Historical reference:

The AMX-13 (75mm or 90mm) is a French light tank produced from 1953 to 1985. It served with the French Army, as the Char 13t(75 or 90 - depends on the gun it carried) Modele 51, and was exported to over twenty-five other nations. Named after its initial weight of 13 tonnes, and featuring a tough and reliable chassis, it was fitted with an oscillating turret built by GIAT Industries (now Nexter) with revolver type magazines which was also used on the Austrian SK-105 Kürassier. Including prototypes and export versions there are over a hundred variants including self-propelled gunanti-aircraft systems, APCs, and ATGM versions. Total production of the AMX-13 family is approximately 7,700 units, around 3,400 of which were exported.
From 1966 the 75mm high-velocity gun was replaced by a 90 mm (the AMX-13/90) medium velocity gun firing more effective HEAT ammunition,(althrought the game has APCR as premium ammo for it) with the French upgrading all existing base models to this specification. By the early 1970s export models were available with an even more potent 105 mm gun. Although there were many variants on the turret the basic chassis was almost unchanged until 1985 when changes including a new diesel engine, fully automatic transmission and new hydropneumatic suspension were introduced.
Production halted with the Model 1987. After sales support and upgrades are still offered through GIAT Industries.
The AMX-13 tank was phased out of service with the French Army in the 1980s. Current French armoured vehicles with a similar role are the ERC 90 Sagaie and the AMX 10 RC.

  • Review/Guide:
The AMX 13 90 is not just a scout. It can out perform in several roles, if needed. But it is not a medium, and never use it as one. It is mostly a scout flanker, but it can be a passive scout as well, but it should not be used as one in most of the cases. Since you have paper armor, the only way to survive is to use your mobility. If you don't move, you're simply dead. Use your speed to help your allies in several flanks, go everywhere your team needs firepower. You can also escape fast if needed. Since having a 6-round autoloader, in combination with the great top speed and mobility, it is a real hit-and-run tank. If you draw your enemies attetion, you will give precious time for your allies to make their moves. Throught, always remember, you have a looong magazine reload, so use your mobility to get a safe place to reload, and never attack on your own in a bunch of enemies.

  • Great scout, but can also play multiple roles
  • 6-round autoloader
  • Mobility
  • Top speed

  • Looong magazine reload
  • Paper armor
  • Poor elavation & depression
  • Long aim time
  • Not so good gun accuracy
